Garage Door Opener Remotes: A Buyer’s Guide to Genie® Remotes

“Dad, what are you doing?,” you say as you walk out of your house to a strange sight: the family sedan is sitting sprawled open on the driveway – all four doors wide open and trunk popped. “Oh, I am looking for the garage door opener remote,” your father growls as he drags himself unceremoniously out of the back seat. He grumpily sits down on the ground and stairs at his feet, looking dejected. “No luck. Guess I will just have to use the keypad from now on,” he says.

“Why don’t you just get a universal remote?”, you ask. “Those never work properly,” your father grumbles. You grin and say, “Genie® has some really great options that will work with your garage door opener, some of which are smart phone enabled. Why don’t we go look through the buyer’s guide,”

I am looking for a replacement remote for a Genie Blue Max garage opener model CM8500-S. Year of installation unknown. Only need a single button. Which one of your replacement remotes will work?

Mark

@Paul – It sounds like you have an older Genie opener. The unit can hold up to seven wireless devices. This includes any old remotes, or wireless devices that have been programmed. Once there is seven, any new remote programmed will kick the last one out that was programmed. To fix this, you can clear the receiver. To clear it press and hold the learn code button in until the red led light goes out. Then reprogram each wireless device back in to the power head up to seven.
You can also call 1-800-354-3643 for programming assistance.

How can I program 2 remotes? I had a GIT-BX remote and just purchased a GL2T-BX. When I programmed the new remote, the first one stopped working. Seems like I can only program only 1, what gives? Thanks

Paul
