Replacing Old Genie® Garage Door Opener Parts

Replacing Old Genie® Garage Door Opener Parts

Sometimes Old Just Means Vintage

Some things from the past we enjoy because they are classic, iconic, and downright cool. Your dad’s 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback, cherry red, black leather interior, chrome accents, with cheesy fuzzy dice that hang from the rearview mirror. The 1940 Twin-Cylinder Chief motorcycle that sits displayed in the back corner of the garage, gleaming white-walled tires, leather handgrips, blacked-out exhaust tips, and a fully restored speedometer. The beat-up sailboat that is mid-restoration, but still has beautiful mahogany trim and exceptionally artistic lines that will assuredly slice through choppy waves like butter.

Your garage is full of memories, our childhoods wrapped up in the backseat of the family station wagon for that mid-summer cross-country trip to the Grand Canyon or winter ski retreat where your brother got stuck on the lift.

We appreciate classics not simply because of the nostalgic appeal, but because we appreciate good design and superior craftsmanship. Something that is well built and well maintained will serve its purpose far beyond its typical life. Sometimes things aren’t old, but they are vintage and need a little help to remain a classic.

Genie® Garage Door Openers

Genie® has been making garage door openers for more than 65 years. Our openers often last a decade or more in normal operation with ongoing maintenance, but we still have some openers in operation that are over 20+ years old. Genie provides assistance with replacing many parts of older operators (manufactured after 1993). Although upgrading to our models with the latest technology is often best, we still stand behind our garage door openers that are 20 years old or more.

Some of our customers drove to senior prom in a car that we now only see at car shows or dragstrips. They keep everything they own in meticulous condition, which includes their garage door opener. Genie can supply many replacement parts such as the carriage, coupler, circuit board, limit switches and limit wires for older screw, chain or belt drive garage door openers. We offer customer-facing diagnostic testing through our blog, on various parts of our website, and through intuitive customer support.

 Asking the Right Questions

Troubleshooting a malfunctioning garage door opener can be frustrating at times. The function of the unit is simple, but how it works can be complex. That is why we offer diagnostics and over-the-phone support to help you through the process. Additionally, we offer an extensive Frequently Asked Questions page with a search function. Type a question into the search bar at the top of the page or scroll through some of our most frequent requests.

All of our operations manuals are available for download online. Simply search for your model number, click the link, and save to your computer for future reference.

 Finding Replacement Parts

One of the toughest tasks when working on an older garage door opener unit is sourcing and buying replacement parts. Many manufacturers no longer support products from seven or even 10 years ago, but Genie stands behind our products. We build them right the first time, every time. That is why we set up this webpage to help our customers find parts for a wide variety of openers made all the way back to 1993.

Finding a replacement part is easy. Simply scroll through the list until you find your model number, then click on the link. You will be taken to a page with a detailed schematic that identifies each piece of your garage door opener by part number. You can then use that part number to order directly from our website or over the phone with one of our customer service agents.

How-To’s

Genie knows that many of today’s homeowners are skilled DIYers, which is why we strive to make it easy for you to maintain and repair your garage door opener. Several of the most common types of repairs or upgrades are outlined in great detail on our website, a few of which include:

Remote Upgrades – Find the right remote for your application, then learn how to pair it to your opener. Genie makes it simple to replace a lost remote or upgrade to a programmable remote system.

Programming HomeLink – HomeLink allows you to pair your car to your garage door opener and ditch the remote. This How-To explains the process of setting up the HomeLink system troubleshooting any issues that may occur.

Opener Repairs – With use, parts wear out or break over time. While we cannot stop wear and tear, we can certainly help you source the part and show you how to fix it. The carriage assembly on screw drive openers is a common replaceable part and we show you how to quickly – and painlessly – install a new one.

Maintenance – Proper maintenance ensures the longevity of your Genie garage door opener and improves operation even in the harshest of conditions. Winter can be especially hard on garage door openers. This checklist will help you ensure your opener is ready for dropping temperatures and long nights.

 Conclusions

Genie manufactures high-quality garage door openers that can last for decades with the proper maintenance. We offer a variety of replacement parts for common models that date back to 1993 and have support staff standing by to help you troubleshoot any possible issue with your garage door opener. On the off chance that a new garage door opener is the best solution, we can help you find the unit that is most appropriate for your situation.

Have Genie screw drive Medallion series opener manufactured in 1994. Is there a replacement remote and if so which one? Thanks

It sounds as if you may have an issue with the safety beams or wiring on your unit. Here are a few things to check. Both of the safety sensors should be lit and solid one red, and one green. If one or both of them are out it is an indication there is a wiring issue. You will want to first be sure the connection on the beams and head are secure. If only one light is off, please disconnect the beam that is not lit and connect it to the wiring on the side that is lit. If the beams lights up replace the wiring to the beam on the non-lit side, if not replace the beams. If both are out you will want to short wire the beams directly to the head you will disconnect the beams and wire them to the terminals on the head that they are currently connected to using two short pieces of 18-20 gauge bell wire. If the beams lite up you will need to replace the wiring, if not replace the beams. If one of the beams is blinking please be sure that the lenses are clean, clear from obstructions and properly aligned. Please count the blink pattern and let us know what the results are. Also, check to see if you can press and hold the wall console in to get the door to close. If you cannot, try removing the safety beam wires from the power head, then try constant pressure on the wall console to close the door. If you still cannot, once the safety beams are not wired, this may be a problem with the circuit board. You can also called 1-800-354-3643 for further assistance.

Opener goes up but won’t go down. The eyes are aligned. This screw drive opener is 20+ years old and has been maintained well over the years. If I DO have to replace it, then I want to put the new one up using the same struts and braces and all of the old components if I can. No rerunning new wires etc. Which NEW Genie will get the job done. Always liked the screw drive system.
It is a 7 foot door with double wall construction but the old 1/2 horse motor worked fine. What do you suggest?
