Garage Door Opener Remotes: A Buyer’s Guide to Genie® Remotes

“Dad, what are you doing?,” you say as you walk out of your house to a strange sight: the family sedan is sitting sprawled open on the driveway – all four doors wide open and trunk popped. “Oh, I am looking for the garage door opener remote,” your father growls as he drags himself unceremoniously out of the back seat. He grumpily sits down on the ground and stairs at his feet, looking dejected. “No luck. Guess I will just have to use the keypad from now on,” he says.

“Why don’t you just get a universal remote?”, you ask. “Those never work properly,” your father grumbles. You grin and say, “Genie® has some really great options that will work with your garage door opener, some of which are smart phone enabled. Why don’t we go look through the buyer’s guide,”

I have a genie 88 1/3 HP screw drive garage door opener that is about 40 years old and is working very good. The problem is I need a replacement remote. Do you have one that will work with this old opener?

Julio Saldivar

@ Jackie – Yes, it sounds like you have a unit that can hold up to seven wireless devices. This includes any old remotes, or wireless devices that have been programmed. Once there is seven, any new remote programmed will kick the last one out that was programmed. To fix this, you can clear the receiver. To clear it press and hold the learn code button in until the red led light goes out. Then reprogram each wireless device back in to the power head up to seven.

We just purchased a home with a 1/2 HP SCREW DRIVE genie garage opener.. we have no remotes and would like to program our cars as well- we are at a loss as to what remotes to purchase that will work! What works with this model?

@Tammy, If the door is only closing with constant pressure on the wired wall console/wall button, then this typically means there is an issue with the safety sensors at the bottom of the garage door. Both sensor lights should have a light and one should be solid red, the other solid green. If either are out, or if the red light is blinking, then you remotes will not work to close the garage door. If the red light is blinking then count how many times it is blinking, before it pauses (it will keep repeating this pattern). You could have an out of alignment beam, or something in the way of the safety beams, or even sunlight interference. Please call us at 1-800-354-3643 with the information on how many times the red light is blinking or if either the green or red is not lit. For the replacement remote, you can go with the G3T garage door opener remote, it will need programmed in prior to using. We can walk you through this as well, at the number provided
